A little about our history . .
Timeline
From a team that built engineered wood truss software in the 70's to Post Frame in 2020 and now Roofing on 2026 - the Keymark team, now known as Smartbuild continues to lead innovations in the construction industry.
SmartBuild Systems began inside the Keymark Enterprises shop, a company that has been building software for the construction industry since 1975.
After attending the NFBA show and recognizing a major need in the post‑frame market, Keith Dietzen started the SmartBuild project and officially founded the company in 2017 with a four‑person team.
Two years of development led to the first license sales in early 2019. Early adopters—including Graber Post Buildings, AB Martin, and Burrows Post Frame Supply—played a key role in shaping the product for the post‑frame industry. Their feedback helped SmartBuild evolve into a leading design and estimating tool.
The team has since grown to more than 20 people, and nearly 2,000 users across the U.S. and Canada rely on SmartBuild products.
In 2022, SmartBuild released All Metal, expanding the platform to support red‑iron weld‑up structures. The product quickly gained momentum across the southern United States, where weld‑up buildings are most common.
In 2024, as Keith prepared for retirement, he searched for a long‑term home for the product he had built. That search led him to Morton Post Frame Supply, an ESOP investing heavily in the post‑frame market. SmartBuild joined a family of sister companies that includes PermaColumn, FootingPad, Classic Equine, and others.
Also in 2024, SmartBuild launched a powerful integration with IdeaRoom, helping suppliers connect website leads directly to production. This integration has been especially valuable in the tube‑steel and carport manufacturing markets.
Looking ahead to summer 2026, SmartBuild is expanding into the roofing bid market with SurfaceBid—a new product that brings SmartBuild’s most popular capabilities to roofing contractors, making it easier to bid metal roofing accurately and efficiently.
SmartBuild remains committed to delivering exceptional customer service and innovative tools in a niche industry that is often overlooked. The mission continues: empower builders, suppliers, and contractors with technology that makes their work faster, easier, and more accurate.
